Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Decision Journal (“DJ,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) is an AI-powered decision journaling web application. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you use our service, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

This policy is effective as of July 1, 2026, and applies to all users of the private beta. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to the practices described here.

2. Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information:

• Account information. Your email address and password (stored as a secure hash). If you sign in with a third-party provider, we receive a profile email and identifier from that provider.
• Decision entries and conversations. The decisions you write about, your stated reasoning, the questions you ask the AI, and the AI's responses. This is the core content you create inside the app.
• Usage data. Anonymized events such as which features you use, how often you open the app, and session duration. We use this to understand how DJ is being used and where to focus improvement.
• Device and browser information. Browser type, operating system, screen resolution, and approximate timezone. We collect this solely for debugging and compatibility purposes.

We do not collect your payment information directly — payments are handled by a third-party processor who maintains their own privacy practices.

3. How we use your information

Your information is used to:

• Operate and deliver the Decision Journal service
• Generate AI responses to your questions (see Section 4 on third-party providers)
• Identify and flag cognitive biases in your decision-making patterns
• Diagnose bugs, improve reliability, and develop new features
• Send you product updates, release notes, and policy changes

We will never use your decision journal entries to train AI models without your explicit, separate opt-in consent. Your private thinking stays private.

4. AI and third-party providers

When you have a conversation in Decision Journal, the text of that conversation — including your decision entries and questions — is sent to Anthropic, the company behind Claude, to generate a response. Anthropic processes this data according to their privacy policy. Under Anthropic's API terms, they do not use API inputs to train their models by default.

We may add or change AI providers in the future. We will update this policy and notify beta users before doing so.

We also use third-party services for analytics, error monitoring, and infrastructure hosting. These providers access data only as needed to perform their services on our behalf.

5. Data storage and security

Your decision journal entries and account data are encrypted at rest and stored on servers located in the United States. Data in transit is protected by TLS encryption.

We implement reasonable technical and organizational safeguards appropriate for a private beta product. No system is perfectly secure — if we become aware of a breach that affects your data, we will notify you promptly.

6. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, we will delete your account and all associated decision entries within 30 days. Some data may be retained in backups for a short period before those backups are rotated out, but we will not use it for any purpose other than disaster recovery.

We may retain anonymized, aggregated usage statistics (which cannot identify you) indefinitely to inform product development.

7. Your rights

You have the right to:

• Export your data. At any time, you can export all of your decision journal entries and conversation history from the app.
• Delete your account and data. You can request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time. We will process this within 30 days.
• Opt out of analytics. You can contact us to opt out of usage analytics collection.
• Correct your information. You can update your account details directly from within the app.

8. Children's privacy

Decision Journal is not intended for users under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have inadvertently done so, we will delete it promptly. 9. Beta-specific disclaimer

During the private beta, Decision Journal is a work in progress. The service, its features, and our data handling practices may change materially. We will send you an email notification before making any material changes to this privacy policy. Continued use of the service after such notice constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

If you have concerns about a proposed change, please reach out before the effective date — we genuinely want your feedback and will do our best to address it.
